Moving Day

In general, moving day went smoothly. Having packed up a lot of the house the day before, the removals arrived and set straight to work. We did our best to tidy and clean around them as they cleared the house from top to bottom, we frantically hoovered our way down the house picking up miscellaneous bits of toys and games that had been left. Typically, once the house was cleared and they started packing up the garden and shed, the heavens opened. Despite waiting for the main deluge to pass the removal men got soaked ferrying things down the garden and into the van.

To add to the chaos of the day, Chloe (our eldest daughter) was due to attend a ‘settling in session’ at her new school in Binsted at 1:30pm. While I was in the midst of sweeping the floors, Tash said a hurried farewell to our home of 9 years and left to collect Chloe from nursery and taker her to the new school. Shortly after this, the removal team loaded the final bits and also set off for our new home in Binsted.

As if on cue, I received a call from the estate agent to inform me that we had completed the sale of our home. We were now in the limbo period when you are technically ‘homeless’ and are crossing everything hoping that the onward purchase goes through smoothly. The previous day, we had issues obtaining the outstanding balance from our solicitor and had concerns that this would hold up proceedings. Sure enough, I received a call informing me that we still owed £32 for some additional searches and fees and we could not complete without this.

Having spoken to Tash and asked her to transfer the money, I continued to frantically mop the floors and then did a final sweep of the house and garden. Having gathered up a variety of random things and all of the cleaning bits I filled the car and said goodbye to our first house. It was sad to leave a home that we had lots of happy memories in, but I left feeling excited to start the next chapter in our lives, hoping we would have the keys by the time I arrived in Binsted.

Although we didn’t yet have the keys, Tash had been able to let herself into the garden and begun familiarising herself with our new surroundings while the removal men waited patiently in the street. When I arrived, Tash and Chloe had returned from school and Nanny and Hollie had also arrived from their day out together. It was lovely to see their excitement as they explored our new garden, and they were thrilled to discover our neighbours had chickens, dogs and guinea pigs.

After a few more calls to the agent and solicitor we finally had the keys and the unpacking begun. To enable us to focus on un-packing and get cracking on some decorating, we shipped the girls off to Nanny and Grandad’s for the night.

Once the removals had left and feeling as though we had earned a drink, we walked down to the Binsted Inn to grab a beer, eat dinner and check out our new local. As we sipped our beers, we were both filled with relief and happiness that we could now call Binsted our home.
